Vietnam Among Top 10 Best Countries for Expats: HSBC Report

Switzerland, Singapore and Canada took the top spots in HSBC's Expat 2019 Global Report, which was released last Thursday.

According to Tuoi Tre, the survey collected data from 18,059 overseas workers from 163 locations and broke the information down into three categories: living, career opportunity, and family life. Vietnam came in 10th overall and was ranked 12th, 3rd and 20th in each category, respectively. Compared to 2018, Vietnam has jumped eight places in the overall ranking.

The country did particularly well when in terms of offering "living fulfillment, ease of settling in, economic stability and work/life balance." Given the low cost of living in Vietnam compared to developed nations, this is not surprising. In other smaller criteria, the country is also seen favorably by respondents: cultural, open and welcoming communities (9th), disposable income (7th), allowing foreign workers to reach career potential (8th), and ease to make friends (4th).

In the report, HSBC said: "The appeal of Vietnam has expanded greatly in the last few years and in particular, serial expats are setting their sights on the magnificent landscape, lively culture and positive work-life balance."

In addition to the top three, the top 10 was rounded out by Spain, New Zealand, Australia, Turkey, Germany and the United Arab Emirates. Singapore had taken the top spot the previous four years.
