Driver Fined VND5.5m for Holding Tet Picnic on Noi Bai-Lao Cai Expressway

What could possibly go wrong?

On February 6, the second day of Tet, live-streamed footage of a family of four eating and drinking, reportedly on the shoulder of the Noi Bai-Lao Cai Expressway, surfaced online from a Facebook account named Ho Viet, VnExpress reports.

The family was seen sitting on a mat with a plethora of typical Tet food and beverages such as beer, soft drinks, bánh chưng and nem. The video became the center of a controversy as netizens berated them for the over-the-top and dangerous antics.

The Tet picnic gathering would have gone without legal consequences if the four had not parked their car on the expressway shoulder. Not long after the video gained popularity online, traffic police stepped in. Viet, the owner of the car and a Thanh Hoa resident, was fined VND5.5 million (US$237) for his parking violations and got his driving license suspended for two months.

The footage has attracted significant negative reaction online, with some criticizing the driver and his family for being reckless. "I was not in my right mind at the time but I didn't intend to do it. Please understand and forgive me," said the driver in a response to the criticism.
