Vietnam Suffers Most Offline Cyberattacks in Southeast Asia This Year

Offline cyberattacks happen when a user is not connected to the internet and malicious codes can spread through third-party devices such as USB, CD and DVD drives.

According to the most recent report from Kaspersky Lab, in the second quarter of 2019, the number of offline cyberattacks in Vietnam was the highest in Southeast Asia, and ranked 30th in the world, Tuoi Tre reports.

The cybersecurity firm found that there were 99 million instants where users were attacked through offline means. This number corresponds to 59.9% of users in Vietnam being attacked. The most common ways for harmful codes to spread in these incidents are through USB, CD and DVD drives.

The firm also detected more than 19 million online attacks within the period of April and June, affecting 27.7% of users in Vietnam.

"Compared to last year, the number of both online and offline cyberattacks in Vietnam decreased. This is the result of Vietnam's government's recent attention to cybersecurity, which is key to the country's digitization goal. The national digitization strategy that's expected to kick off from 2019 can improve Vietnam's cybersecurity in the future," said Yeo Siang Tiong, general manager of Kaspersky Lab in Southeast Asia.
