Hanoi Truck Driver Saves Toddler Falling From 12th Floor of Apartment Building

The incredible story serves to remind us that the bravest superheroes are the ones that we encounter in everyday life.

Yesterday, February 28, Major Nguyễn Minh Thắng of the Thanh Xuan District Police Department confirmed with Tuoi Tre that a three-year-old fell out of her home’s balcony, but was saved by a passerby. The flat is located on floor 12A of an apartment complex at 60B Nguyen Huy Tuong Street in the district. It was unclear if other family members were home at the time.

At 5:30pm on the same day, the toddler fell after she climbed over balcony railing, according to video clips that other apartment residents posted online. For a few minutes, she hung onto the poles while distressed onlookers called out for help.

Luckily, 31-year-old Nguyễn Ngọc Mạnh, a truck driver who happened to be on the ground floor, heard the commotion. “At the moment, I was sitting in my vehicle waiting to deliver some goods when I heard screaming,” he recounted the story on Zing in Vietnamese. “I initially thought that it was just a parent disciplining their child, but after I heard the cries for help, I ran out and saw the child hanging onto the railing.”

Reacting swiftly, Mạnh climbed onto the metallic canopy on the first floor right beneath the girl. When her grip gave out, he managed to catch her. “My daughter is also three years old like the toddler. At the time, I imagined that the baby dangling outside the balcony was my daughter,” he said.

After that, Mạnh gave the toddler to the building’s security guard and continued with his job and didn't leave his contact info behind, though he told Zing that the toddler’s parents reached out later to inform him of their daughter’s condition.

On the morning of March 1, a representative from the National Children’s Hospital gave a statement regarding the three-year-old toddler. She dislocated her hip joint and was treated with a closed reduction and given orthosis. Preliminary inspections did not show damage to her abdomen or chest, but the hospital is monitoring her and conducting further tests.
