Vietnam National University Included in U.S. News Global University Rankings

Two universities in Vietnam recently made the ranking of the world’s top tertiary institutions, though the selections are not surprising.

As VnExpress reports, the Vietnam National University, Hanoi and Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City are placed at 1,059th and 1,176th in U.S. News’ global university rankings for 2020, which comprises 1,500 schools from 81 countries. In this edition, the list has 250 more schools and looks at six more countries than last year. The top 10 institutions are all from the United States or United Kingdom, with Harvard University claiming the top spot, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University.

Within Asia, VNU-Hanoi is ranked at No. 275, while VNU-HCMC is No. 322. Unsurprisingly, the National University of Singapore tops the regional list, followed by Beijing’s Tsinghua University and Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University.

In recent years, Vietnam’s universities have slowly gained recognition from international rankings. Just last year, the QS World University Rankings placed VNU-HCMC in the the 701st-750th tier, while its Hanoi counterpart is in the 801st-1,000th tier.

According to U.S. News, their methodology uses 13 academic and research indicators to come up with the rankings. These include criteria like total citations, international collaboration, conferences, and publications, among others.

On a national level, the US has the most universities that made the list, with 249. China has 188 representatives while the UK has 86, Japan has 82 and Germany has 66.
