Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh Will Settle Down in Vietnam Permanently

The influential Buddhist leader recently returned to Vietnam from Thailand after a year abroad.

In a letter sent to his disciples and students, Thich Nhat Hanh said that he will be staying in Tu Hieu Pagoda in Hue, where he first practiced Buddhism at 16, for good, VnExpress reports. "The Buddhist tradition and wisdom I learned from Tu Hieu Pagoda are now spreading all over the world," Hanh said.

"I believe it's time for me to return to my roots to live among my fellow brothers during these times. Moving back to the motherland to live and continue to contribute to the Buddhist teaching body here is my deepest wish. That's why I decided to return to Vietnam to live on this motherland together with fellow followers and students until the day I die," he continues.

The zen master recently celebrated his 92nd birthday on October 11. In November 2014, he suffered a major brain hemorrhage which led to a seven-week coma. While Hanh's health has significantly improved as the result of physiotherapy, he currently can't speak and is only able to respond using non-verbal cues.
